Executive Summary
Given all of the interest in technologically innovative ways to do colon examinations today, from virtual colonoscopies using computerized tomography to imaging systems contained in small pills that patients swallow, a la Given Imaging Ltd., the technology that Heidelberg, Germany-based STM Medizintechnik GMBH has developed seems hopelessly conventional: yet another variant on a traditional endoscope. But STM officials argue that their device has the look and feel of a device that physicians are already comfortable with, combined with innovative features that solve several of the limitations of traditional endoscopy that led device companies, and their customers, in search of new approaches.
