Executive Summary
Preeminent contract research organization Battelle is moving away from its image as a stodgy think tank and becoming more market-sensitive. While about 80% of its work is government oriented, the remainder has shifted from small, spot problem-solving projects toward those which are broader in scope--a value- and risk-sharing model where Battelle contributes resources and capital in exchange for royalties and, in some cases, equity in a start-up. Two such examples are Battelle Pulmonary Therapeutics (proprietary drug delivery technologies) and OmniViz (data mining software), both of which were incubated for several years within Battelle before being spun out.
