China Issues National Alert As Fatal EV71 Cases Spread

Chinese authorities issued a nationwide alert concerning an outbreak of enterovirus 71, fatal to 24 children so far. All but two of the deaths were reported in a city in Anhui Province. The other two were reported in neighboring Quangdong Province, prompting the national alert. Authorities say about 5,000 cases of hand-foot-mouth disease caused by EV71 have been reported in Anhui, nearly 4,000 of them in the same city, Fuyang.
