Study Shows China Has Double Global MDR TB Rate

Executive Summary

A new study says China has double the rate of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis as the world in general. The joint Chinese, Dutch study put that type of TB at 9.3 percent in China, nearly double the 4.8 percent rate in the rest of the world. The researchers said a fourth of the world's previously treated patients now with MDR-TB are located in China. The nation also accounts for second-highest prevalence of the disease, behind only Russia. China's CDC led the researchers in the study covering the past nine years.
