Executive Summary

GlaxoSmithKlinehas donated the first state-of-the-art clinical trial centre in Nigeria at the Lagos State University College of Medicine. The site was selected from 92 universities and 19 colleges of medicine, and is fitted out with medical equipment and a 24-hour power supply. It will focus on the development of vaccines, as well as serving to improve Nigeria's reputation in health research. The chairman of the national health research ethics committee of Nigeria Professor Clement Adebamowo said that the centre would help promote Nigeria, and this would in turn generate "employment, new drugs and new discovery". Trials will start immediately with the recruitment of subjects for an ongoing global vaccine trial.
