New CEO of Bill and Melinda Gates foundation named

Susan Desmond-Hellmann has been named as the next chief executive officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation – effective from the 1 May 2014. An oncologist by training, Dr Desmond-Hellmann is currently the chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco. Prior to her tenure at UCSF, she was president of product development at Genentech, where she led the development and introduction of two of the first gene-targeted therapies for cancer, Avastin and Herceptin. Dr Desmond-Hellmann also currently sits on the board of directors for proctor and Gamble, and Facebook.
