Declaring "chimpanzees are very special animals" and the "closet relatives" to humans, National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Dr Francis Collins on 26 June disclosed the agency plans to significantly reduce the use of those creatures in taxpayer-funded biomedical research – retiring 310 of the 360 animals the US government owns.
