This article was originally published in Scrip

Executive Summary

Microsoft chair Bill Gates has pledged $750 million to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, after its executive director, Professor Michel Kazatchkine, announced he will be stepping down in mid-March after leading the organisation for five years. Mr Kazatchkine's decision follows recent criticism about the way the fund is managed, in particular last year's reports of "grave misuse of funds" which led to donors such as Germany and Sweden freezing their donations.
