The Italian pharmaceutical industry increased the value of its production output by 1% to €22.73 billion, or 12.1% of the European total, in 2008. And while total exports declined by 0.5% to €11.97 billion, the country still produces more pharmaceuticals than it consumes. However, the export balance declined from €1.11 billion to €522 million.
