Executive Summary
The US Institute of Medicine's Conflict of Interest in Medical Research, Education and Practice committee has issued a far-reaching report outlining how it believes physicians should reject many financial arrangements with pharmaceutical firms. One troublesome area remains industry funding of continuing medical education (CME) courses, which are required of many US physicians. The committee has not called for total elimination of industry support for CME, but rather urges a "new system of funding CME ... free of industry influence".
