Executive Summary
FDA budget: Full House Appropriations Committee approves the agency's FY 1998 budget as adopted by the Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee on June 25 with two changes. The House allocated $944 mil. for the agency for FY 1998, an increase from $921 mil. for fiscal 1997. Human drug programs will receive $255 mil., up almost $3 mil. from the previous year. The budget allocation is essentially the same as that requested by the Clinton Administration for the year beginning Oct. 1. The two changes give FDA an additional $10 mil. in funds for food safety initiatives, not $12 mil. as approved by the Agriculture Subcommittee, and $9 mil. in additional funding for youth smoking prevention programs ("The Rose Sheet" June 30, In Brief)...
