Executive Summary

The Italian government intends to allocate some Lit 100,000 billion ($55 billion) a year to healthcare under its National Health Plan for 1998-2000. The parliament has yet to approve the plan. Its measures are aimed at achieving a 10% cut in mortality due to cancer and to cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and infectious diseases, as well as better care for at-risk sections of the population, such as children and the elderly, people with mental illness and drug addicts.
