This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Scotland today gave the go-ahead for a £100m ($179m) children's hospital to be built on the site of Glasgow's Southern General hospital, featuring what is being billed as groundbreaking plans to integrate these services with maternity care. The question of whether to adopt this "gold standard" option has been the focus of a three-year consultation on the project, informed by a clinical advisory group headed by Professor Andrew Calder. The project, which will now undergo final consultation, is due to be operational by 2010-11. The project, agreed in September 2004, is part of an £850m programme to develop hospitals in the Glasgow area by 2013.
