The increasing prevalence of MIS and the opportunity for greater MIS penetration in existing procedures translate into significant growth potential for the MIS products market in the years ahead. Despite some challenges, device manufacturers are driving growth in the market by targeting key procedures and geographies with new robotic surgery systems and robotic-like technologies designed to enable more complex procedures to be performed via an MIS approach.
Three years ago, Covidien signaled its intention to build a gastrointestinal device business with its acquisition of Barrx Medical and its esophageal ablation technology for Barrett’s esophagus. Since then, the industry has been waiting for Covidien to follow through on its strategy to expand its presence in the $3 billion GI market, and that next step came with the company’s recent $860 million acquisition of publicly traded Given Imaging Ltd.
The prospective medical device tax, the continuing decline of venture investing, pricing challenges, austerity measures in Europe, and other headwinds continued to push against the medtech industry in 2012. But emerging clinical and geographic markets, along with an active M&A market, provided the industry with some momentum.
