Dade's Integration Expertise

Laboratory automation offered by large diagnostic companies has been slow to gain customer acceptance. One bright spot has been Dade Behring Inc.'s Dimension product line, which has found in recent years a loyal following. The Dimension RxL offers the first chemistry analyzer that has the option of also running a number of common heterogeneous immunoassay tests. It has been a huge success, giving Dade a 92% market share of the 32% of laboratories that have systems integrating clinical chemistry and immunoassays, helping labs save labor, time and money. Dimension is the product line most responsible for Dade's comeback from bankruptcy two years ago.

bioMerieux-Pierre Fabre Lives Up to Its Name

Only seven weeks after merging, French diagnostic-pharma company bioMerieux-Pierre Fabre is proposing to buy Organon Teknika's diagnostics business. The deal would combine two players with complementary, not overlapping, strengths in microbiology and infectious diseases. Under Dutch labor law, the proposal must be reviewed by Dutch employee groups and antitrust regulators before Organon Teknika's parent, Akzo Nobel NV, can formally accept it.

Becton Dickinson's Magic Markers

Becton Dickinson thinks the continued automation of diagnostics is a no-win, low-margin game. Instead, it's making a big bet on discovering new, proprietary tests. And while the gamble is both high-cost and high-risk, the company figures the drug industry has now funded enough infrastructure and genomic research to make BD's search affordable. One other gamble: BD will have to partner out much of what it discovers since it doesn't have all the requisite testing platforms on which to run the assays.
