Executive Summary
Bioethicist and law professor R Alta Charo is joining the US Food and Drug Administration as a senior advisor reporting to Assistant Commissioner for Policy David Horowitz, effective 31 August. Professor Charo, the Warren P Knowles Professor of Law and Bioethics at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, will be part of a think-tank within the commissioner’s office that will focus on thinking “more strategically about comprehensive approaches to new challenges for the agency”. A likely topic, Professor Charo said, will be “the largely unregulated genetic tests that are marketed directly to consumers”.
