Executive Summary

The European Commission is seeking expert scientific opinion from one of its committees as it considers whether the sale of mercury sphygmomanometers should be banned in Europe1,2. The sale of all other mercury-based devices was banned on 3 April, in accordance with a European directive (Directive 2007/51/EC)3 restricting the marketing of certain measuring devices containing mercury.
