Japan’s health authorities plan to ease restrictions on use of unapproved drugs to treat patients with certain advanced illnesses. The “compassionate drug use” plan under consideration for submission to next year’s Diet could allow at least some of the drugs that would not be covered by the national health insurance plan to be covered by expanding the plan’s mixed-coverage treatments. The Health Ministry seeks to cover drugs already approved in Europe, the U.S. and other areas with high regulatory standards and under consideration by Japanese drug makers.
