A Chinese study concluded Asian women have a lower rate of breast cancer than elsewhere, but they develop the disease at a much younger age. The Cancer Foundation of China said a 10-year study showed most Chinese patients develop the disease in their 40s, about 10 years younger than the average for Western women. Of 4,200 women surveyed, nearly 40% were diagnosed with the disease in their 40s, a finding the lead researcher said suggested a need for more-targeted intervention in China. He suggested screening for breast cancer should begin at age 35. He added the mortality rate in China is rising at the same time it is lowering elsewhere.
