This article was originally published in PharmAsia News

Executive Summary

Major Japanese drug and device makers are accelerating development of DNA chips that detect disease in patients. Toray and Toshiba are coordinating specifications for the chips to be used in hospitals, and Mitsubishi Rayon aims to commercialize the product and apply for approval with the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in three years. As small as a fingernail, the chip uses material and semi-conductor technologies to screen for cancers or infections using patient blood samples in as little as 10 minutes.
