The Australian government is speeding up plans for a 10 percent reduction in the amount its Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme pays for covered medicines. The PBS would be able to do so, under government plans, by buying generics once they have achieved a sufficient share of the Australian market. The impact of the yet-to-be-announced changes would be felt on hundreds of PBS-covered drugs and could be in effect as soon as mid-year, well ahead of a once-suggested 2011 start date.
