India Price Cap Agency Considers Drug Packaging Cost Pass-Along

Executive Summary

India's drug-pricing agency is expected to allow the pharmaceutical industry to pass on the increasing cost of packaging the products. The industry had proposed the pass-along as rising packaging costs figured larger in the cost of marketing the medicines. As a result, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority asked drug makers to submit their actual costs so it can revise the cap on the price that can be charged at the retail level. Makers also have argued that part of the increased packaging cost, particularly for innovative and specialized drugs, is due to a need for packaging techniques to guard against counterfeits.
