China is pressing ahead with its legislation for food safety. An expert who participates in the Food Safety Law draft reveals that the document will be subjected to the fourth review late February and finalized thereafter. Relatively major amendments have been made to the existing draft, which include: (1) instituting a food safety risk assessment system; (2) unified food safety standards and information disclosure; (3) making manufacturers and distributors responsible for food safety; (4) improvement of the current sectional supervision system, while empowering the State Council to conduct timely adjustment; and (5) establishment of relief channels for consumer rights and interests, as well as increased penalty compensation levels.
