Smith & Nephew To Move Memphis Manufacturing To China

Smith & Nephew, a maker of medical devices with a unit in Memphis, says it is switching its manufacturing jobs to China where it is building a factory, but still expects to expand its Tennessee-based work force. The U.K.-based firm is moving the factory work for its orthopedic reconstruction unit to China, to a factory to be completed in 2010, to make surgical instruments and unfinished components for artificial limbs to be completed in other countries. The Chinese factory also might make plastic test implants that precede real implants, according to the company.
