Japan’s Ministry Considers Measures To Continue Encephalitis Vaccination

Executive Summary

Facing an effective hiatus on vaccinations for Japanese encephalitis, Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare reviewed the issue July 25th and determined that a continuous vaccination is necessary to prevent the disease. Due to a concern of adverse effects, the vaccine's production had been halted, and a new vaccine is still under development. The stockpile of the current vaccine is estimated to run out as early as next April. The ministry is considering prioritizing and limiting the vaccinations to children in the Western area of Japan, which has a higher ratio of virus affected pigs.
