Japanese Develop 15-Minute Bird Flu Test Kit

Executive Summary

Japan's International Medical Center says it has developed a 15-minute test for the presence of the H5N1 avian influenza virus. Current tests require six hours to detect the virus. In some cases the testing apparatus is so large it cannot be moved, causing test samples to have to be transported, adding to the time delay. IMC says its kit, developed with diagnostics maker Mizuho Medy, is mobile and needs only a lung or throat fluid sample from suspected carriers of the virus.
