New artemisinin technologies to boost antimalarial supplies

Three new technologies to boost the supply of artemisinin-based antimalarials were described at a conference on The Artemisinin Enterprise held recently at the University of York, UK. They include improved plant breeding, novel synthetic biology approaches, and the identification of new peroxide derivatives, the meeting heard. The Artemisinin Enterprise is a joint collaboration of the Institute for OneWorld Health (iOWH), the Centre for Novel Agricultural Products at the University of York, UK, and the Medicines for Malaria Venture.
