Executive Summary

The Obama administration on 2 July found itself in the odd position of actually using a ruling decided against it just two days earlier by the US Supreme Court in Hobby Lobby v Burwell to back up the government's argument in a separate lawsuit that its accommodation for religiously affiliated nonprofits to opt-out of complying with birth control coverage is sufficient to protect religious freedoms while ensuring the requirements of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) are met.
