US GAO report reveals increasing hardship for seniors with expensive drugs

This article was originally published in Scrip

Executive Summary

A key House Democratic leader, Representative Pete Stark, has pointed to a March 1st report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the investigative arm of Congress, which shows that seniors' out-of-pocket costs for "specialty-tier" prescription drugs are escalating rapidly and causing great hardship. These products, which tend to be the most expensive drugs available for Medicare patients and are affected by the "doughnut hole" coverage gap, include cancer drugs.
