Former US FDA leader Goddard dies aged 86

Executive Summary

Dr James Goddard, who served as US FDA commissioner from January 1966 to July 1968 and helped overhaul the agency in the wake of mounting Congressional criticism on a host of topics, died on December 18th in Laguna Woods, California, at the age of 86. His major accomplishments at the FDA included spearheading the conduct, together with the National Academy of Sciences, of efficacy reviews of about 4,000 pre-1962 drugs.
