Ingredients Marketplace New Products Roundup: Fruit d’Or, AstaReal, ExcelVite

This article was originally published in The Tan Sheet

Executive Summary

Bio-Cat ups concentration, stability in probiotic; modified starch for nutritious granola; and more news in brief.

Fruit d’Or cranberry and chocolate probiotic

Canadian firm Fruit d’Or NutraceuticalsInc. prepares to launch its Choco Cran organic chocolate peanut butter cup with probiotic-rich cranberry, each cup containing 2bn colony-forming units of bacillus coagulans MTCC 5856. The Quebec business announced the product during Ingredient Marketplace April 27-29 in Orlando, Fla., where it showcased the candy ahead of official launch. A two-cup package will retail for $1.99. Fruit d’Or Nutraceuticals, which markets cranberry juice, entered the dietary supplement category three years ago and markets the Cran Naturelle supplement for urinary tract and vascular health, and cranberry powder and tea.

Bio-Cat ups concentration, stability in probiotic

Bio-Cat Microbials LLC says its recently launched Opti-Biome bacillus subtilis MB40 is a “highly-concentrated, shelf-stable probiotic for dietary supplements and food products.” The naturally occurring, spore-forming organism self-protects from extreme pH and heat, including the conditions associated with some food manufacturing processes, says the Shakopee, Minn., firm. “The proprietary strain can be encapsulated in a dietary supplement to provide a more diverse probiotic product and support label claims with impressive colony forming unit,” Bio-Cat says in a release promoting the launch. MB40 can raise and stabilize the colony-forming unit count of products, and minimizes the need to over-formulate due to concerns about the shelf-life of first-generation products, the firm adds.

Astaxanthin from natural algae

AstaReal Inc. introduces AstaReal Clear100, a 1% water-soluble astaxanthin extract from natural algae source, formulated for ready-to-drink beverages for both the food and dietary supplement markets, the Burlington, N.J., division of Fuji Chemical Industries Co. Ltd., said at the trade show. The extract is beneficial for sports performance, is a powerful antioxidant and promotes skin health, the firm says, without disclosing a price for the product. The firm also markets AstaReal softgels and bulk softgels available in multiple potencies and custom formulas.

Carotenoid ingredients for eye, heart health

ExcelVite Inc., marketer of palm mixed tocotrienol and carotenoids complex products, showcased its new line of EVTene carotenoid ingredients. The range, based on the Edison, N.J., firm's EVTene oil concentrate, contains mainly alpha- and beta-carotene and other carotenoids such as gamma carotene and lycopene. Carotenes have been shown to deliver health benefits such as eye and heart health, according to the firm, which recommends its products for use as a natural yellow to orange food colorant and is available as EVTeneSol water-dispersible powder, EVTeneSem emulsion and Alphabeads/EVTeneBeads beadlets to cater to multiple product formulations, the company says.

Modified starch for nutritious granola

Addressing consumer tastes shifting from sweet, less-nutritious granola to a more wholesome versions with fiber and no added sugar, Grain Processing Corp. launches Instant Pure-Cote modified starch that replaces traditional syrups and provides adhesion to hold grana clusters together. The Muscatine, Iowa, firm says the modified food starch also can be used as a primary and secondary film-former in aqueous tablet coatings, softgel capsules and oral thin films.
