Amendment to Labor/HHS appropriations bill (H.R. 2660) seeking to add $1.5 bil. to NIH's appropriation is defeated during Senate debate on the measure Sept. 10. Introduced by Sens. Arlen Specter (R-Penn.), Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), amendment would have brought total FY 2004 increase for NIH to $2.5 bil. Aug. 29 letter signed by more than 575 health organizations urged Senators to support the amendment.
