Alberto-Culver: Sales increase 9.8% to $456.2 mil. in the third quarter of FY 1997 (ended June 30), the company announced July 24. Earnings grew 16.8% from the year-ago period. Commenting that this is the "first quarter in two years where year-to-year comparisons reflected no incremental impact from major new acquisition activity," Alberto-Culver said the 10% sales growth is "quite satisfactory." The firm's U.S. sales grew "between 7% and 8%" from the year-ago period, while international sales were up 4%, affected by the strong U.S. dollar, according to the company. Alberto VO5 Hot Oil products and St. Ives lotions performed particularly well in the quarter, Alberto said, adding that its recently launched Cortexx hair care brand (February) has been performing "satisfactorily" given the increased competition in the marketplace.
