AM COSMETICS' PAVION ACQUISITION GIVES FIRM A TOP TEN COSMETICS LINE; Pavion's Wet n' Wild brand generated $70.4 mil. in sales for the 52-week period ended May 25, making it the eighth largest color cosmetics line in the makeup segment, according to data supplied by Information Resources, Inc. (Chicago). AM Cosmetics, which was established when Morningside Capital bought the Arthur Matney Company in June 1996, announced its intention to purchase Pavion on July 1. Including the Arthur Matney purchase, the Pavion deal marks the fourth cosmetics acquisition led by Morningside in 12 months; the company also handled AM's purchase of RH Cosmetics and Carson Products' purchase of the Cutex brand.

ModiFace launches forecasting tool: Toronto-based virtual makeover firm introduces ShadeCast, a makeup sampling and forecasting tool based on behavioral tracking. ShadeCast is used in conjunction with iPhone application MakeUp, which allows consumers to virtually try on makeup in hundreds of shades from brands including Revlon, Cover Girl, Lancome and Clinique. ShadeCast offers 1,000 cosmetic shades from 40 brands and assigns a ShadeScore "to approximately position the [app's] hottest and most sampled color." ModiFace exec Nikkie Gatto likens the app to radio music playlists, helping consumers "looking to capture the current look, but also provide vital market intelligence to our retail channel partners," she says in Nov. 3 release.
