Germany’s cabinet has given the go-ahead for the introduction of a unified contribution rate of 14.6% across all the country’s statutory health insurance funds. Set to be implemented on 1 January 2009, the move is an attempt to re-emphasise the “solidarity” aspect of the health service, by doing away with disparities in the contribution rate that varied as much as 4.7%.
