Executive Summary
SMITHKLINE "COMMITTED QUITTERS" PROGRAM PRODUCES 35.6% QUIT RATE after six weeks in a study of 3,807 smokers presented by Saul Shiffman, PhD, et al., University of Pittsburgh, at the 10th World Congress on Tobacco or Health Aug. 24-28 in Beijing, China. To test the efficacy of the "Committed Quitters" (CQ) program, available with purchase of SmithKline's Nicorette nicotine gum or Nicoderm CQ patches, the researchers randomized the enrollees into one of three groups: no additional assistance, "standard" CQ or "enhanced" CQ with a phone call from a counselor. All of the participants used Nicorette gum.
