MAKO buys partner Pipeline as Stryker deal fuels further acquisition rumors

Executive Summary

Robotic surgery specialist MAKO Surgical, which is itself about to be acquired by Stryker, has just agreed to buy partner Pipeline Biomedical’s orthopedic devices and related instruments for around $2.5m and nearly four million MAKO shares. The two companies have worked together since 2010, with Cedar Knolls, New Jersey-based Pipeline developing and supplying “advanced implant technologies” for use with MAKO’s RIO orthopedic system. This included the MAKO-branded Restoris PST cup and tapered stem hip implant system for use with the RIO MAKOplasty total hip arthroplasty software.
