Minister slams German doctors over breast screening stance

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Last week's decision by the federal health committee of the German Lower House (Bundestag) to recommend the introduction of a mammography screening programme according to European guidelines has been strongly criticised by the Berlin doctors' chamber (AKB). Recent studies have shown that screening programmes do not contribute to a reduction in mortality rates among breast cancer sufferers, and this makes the new recommendation by the health committee "medically, ethically and politically questionable", says the AKB.
