Sensor-enabled surgery firm gets Imperial leg-up

Executive Summary

Smart Surgical Appliances (SSA), a UK start-up developing sensor-enabled surgical instrumentation, has secured seed funding of an undisclosed amount from Imperial Innovations, the technology commercialisation arm of Imperial College London. The firm's technology, based on research from Imperial's Department of Biosurgery and Surgical Technology, is expected to improve current minimally-invasive surgical techniques by enabling doctors to receive real-time sensing and feedback from the operative site. Acondition of the financing being granted was the appointment of Paul Donnelly as chairman of SSA. Mr Donnelly, who has made a private investment in SSA, was most recently president international of a UK-based endoscope sterilisation equipment company Puricore.
